Nicola had her first post operative cardiology review today! It was great! I absolutely love her Cardiologist, he's fantastic! And we trust him completely!
He said that the pressures are a little higher in her pulmonary and ventricular valves than they were post operatively, but all in all he's still fairly happy with it.
He did comment though that he's pretty sure that she will need another balloon catheter at some point in the not too distant future. He said that he was confident he would win money if he bet on her going back in to the cath lab again.
Once we pointed out that she is a major anaesthetic risk he did take pause though...
He's going to take the same train of thought as the gastro team. If she has to go under, do as much as he can when he can and make it count. So, instead of just going in for the catheter again, she will most likely end up going in for open heart surgery to repair the pulmonary valve surgically instead of just tearing it again and hoping for the best.
If they do that then they will most likely repair the atrial septal defect at the same time, so the bidirectional atrial shunt should stop and her cardiac related cyanotic episodes along with it!
Woohoo!
It's still hard to believe that we're adjusting to this life to the point where these conversations are second nature to us.
On the flip side, I was sent a quiz on facebook yesterday designed for nursing staff to see how knowledgable they are... I scored 99%.
